about

Floating World began in 1996 at Indre Studios in Philadelphia. The studio is no more but the mission lives on in Michael Comstock’s fantastic Indre Recording mobile services. Michael, Tim Berry and I had a band when we were at the College of Wooster, and we reconvened in Philly, along with a visit from David Hamburger and his pedal steel, to take a crack at these new songs of mine. I took the tracks home and worked on them in Knoxville at David Lovett’s Grinning Deer studios, and tried to teach myself everything about engineering, mixing, and working Pro Tools along the way. I learned a lot, and put out my best effort at the album in the form of home-burned CDs in 1998 and 1999. As I learned more in the following decades I wished I could have made that record sound more like I imagined it than how it did in 1998. So here we are. I’m only slightly embarrassed to say this is not the first time I’ve attempted this, but I think I’ve gotten something more right this time.

These are not the most mature works of writing or playing, but I always felt there was something special here. Plus it’s the only record featuring the founding members of This is Judy! Floating World has something of the sound of Indre Studios and some young folks trying to start their life’s work. This new version stays with the spirit of the early version, but has some different choices here and there in the arrangements, sounds and textures. Plus I threw in an outtake recording of “Don’t Save the Kisses” from the overdub sessions in Knoxville.
